Anticipation builds as the countdown to the release of the crime drama Highest 2 Lowest nears its end. On the evening of August 11th, New York City was abuzz with excitement as the film made its debut at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. The premiere was a star-studded affair, bringing together the film’s cast, creators, and a host of celebrities to celebrate the latest project from the legendary duo, Spike Lee and Denzel Washington. This pair, known for their iconic collaborations on films such as Mo’ Better Blues, Malcolm X, He Got Game, and Inside Man, are set to present another compelling narrative.
Set against the backdrop of New York City’s urban landscape, Highest 2 Lowest is a contemporary retelling of Akira Kurosawa’s revered film High and Low. Under the direction of Spike Lee, the story follows David King, portrayed by Denzel Washington, a former titan of the music industry lauded for his unparalleled talent in identifying musical hits. As King attempts to salvage his declining record label, he faces a personal and ethical dilemma when his best friend’s child is abducted instead of his own.
The film boasts a stellar cast, including Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, A$AP Rocky, Ice Spice, Dean Winters, John Douglas Thompson, LaChanze, Aubrey Joseph, Michael Potts, Wendell Pierce, and Elijah Wright.
Scripted by Alan Fox, the screenplay draws inspiration from the original work of Kurosawa, Hideo Oguni, Ryuzo Kikushima, and Eijiro Hisaita. Kurosawa’s masterpiece itself is adapted from Ed McBain’s novel King’s Ransom. The film’s production team includes Todd Black and Jason Michael Berman, who have crafted this thrilling reinterpretation. Highest 2 Lowest is slated for a theatrical release this Friday, August 15th, and will become available for streaming on AppleTV+ starting September 5th.
