Stephen A. Smith Criticizes Trump, Calls Out Sleeping at Knicks Game

Stephen A. Smith and Donald Trump: An Unlikely Clash at the NBA Finals

In a surprising turn of events, sports commentator Stephen A. Smith found himself at odds with former President Donald Trump during the NBA finals. The tense exchange began when Smith publicly advised Trump to avoid attending the game between the San Antonio Spurs and the New York Knicks, which the Spurs won 115-111.

Smith’s admonishment was not politically motivated, he claimed, but rather a matter of logistics and what he believed was in the best interest of New Yorkers. Smith even went so far as to preemptively blame Trump for a Knicks loss, which ultimately occurred. In response, Trump, who reportedly faced boos upon arrival, dismissed Smith’s comments, labeling him a “nice guy” but questioning his aptitude and intelligence, especially in the context of Smith’s occasional musings about running for president.

On his ESPN show First Take, Smith fired back at Trump. “You wanna talk about IQ,” Smith retorted, challenging Trump to a debate and questioning why Trump had avoided him over the past year. Smith’s comments hinted at an ongoing attempt to engage Trump in a political dialogue, an unexpected rivalry that few saw coming.

Smith, appreciative of being called a “nice guy,” expressed that Trump’s jab at his intelligence crossed a line, prompting him to show a more combative side. He criticized Trump for appearing to doze off during the game, drawing a parallel to Trump’s frequent critiques of President Joe Biden, whom Trump often derides as “Sleepy Joe.”

Smith’s remarks were echoed in a report from The Hill, where he stated, “And guess what he was doing during the game, ladies and gentlemen. Go online, look at the videos… The brother wasn’t awake.” Smith further questioned, “Didn’t you call out former President Joe Biden, ‘Sleepy Joe’? Well, what should we call you. Because you weren’t awake.”

Despite Trump’s initial dismissal, Smith’s invocation of Biden’s nickname seemed to provoke a shift in tone from Trump, who has a history of using disparaging remarks toward Black individuals. This unexpected feud highlights the unpredictable nature of political and public discourse in today’s media landscape.
