Sheinbaum and Trump Discuss Trade and Security in Cordial Phone Call

Presidents of Mexico and the U.S. Discuss Critical Bilateral Issues

Amid evolving geopolitical landscapes, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and U.S. President Donald Trump engaged in a 40-minute phone conversation on Thursday, touching upon pivotal topics such as trade and security concerns that are vital to both nations.

Following the conversation, President Sheinbaum characterized the dialogue with Trump as “cordial” and emphasized their shared commitment to “continue moving forward” on these significant issues.

President Trump reciprocated the positive sentiment through a social media post, highlighting the “very productive telephone conversation” and praising Sheinbaum as “wonderful and highly intelligent.”

The call coincides with recent high-level discussions in Washington, D.C., involving Mexican Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. The two sides have initiated formal discussions on potential reforms to the USMCA trade agreement, an accord pivotal for maintaining tariff-free trade among Mexico, the United States, and Canada.

This trade agreement, up for review this summer, faces scrutiny, especially after President Trump labeled it “irrelevant,” suggesting the upcoming review could lead to renegotiation.
