Alleged Cartel Leader Arrested in Connection with Mexican Mayor’s Murder
In a significant development in Mexico’s battle against cartel violence, authorities have apprehended Ramón Álvarez Ayala, known by the alias “R1,” who is believed to be a prominent figure in the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. Álvarez is accused of orchestrating the murder of Carlos Manzo, the mayor of Uruapan, Michoacán, in late 2025.
Omar Garcia Harfuch, Mexico’s security minister, highlighted the arrest as a pivotal move in President Claudia Sheinbaum’s strategic efforts to dismantle criminal networks through enhanced intelligence and coordinated investigations. “This action represents a significant advance in President Claudia Sheinbaum’s strategy to combat extortion and weaken criminal structures through intelligence, investigation, and coordination,” Harfuch stated on social media.
The assassination of Mayor Manzo had previously ignited widespread condemnation throughout Mexico, with many citizens expressing concern over the government’s capacity to safeguard them from the pervasive threat of cartel-related violence. In response to the murder, authorities have now detained a total of 31 individuals believed to be linked to the crime.
The arrest also drew commendation from international partners. Terry Cole, head of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, praised Mexican security forces for their efforts in capturing Álvarez, sharing his congratulations in a public statement on social media.
