President Sheinbaum Announces Major Port Modernization in Sonora

President Sheinbaum Unveils Port Modernization Endeavor in Sonora

President Claudia Sheinbaum’s recent visit to Sonora, Mexico, brought significant developments as she announced the commencement of a major port modernization effort in the city of Guaymas, located along the Gulf of California.

Alongside Sonoran Governor Alfonso Durazo, Sheinbaum highlighted the substantial private investment totaling billions of dollars dedicated to upgrading the port facilities in Guaymas. During her announcement, Sheinbaum stated, “It’s a very important investment of 130 billion pesos, which is finally starting this year; in the first quarter of this year. That’s the commitment we made here with the investors and the team.”

A significant portion of the investment is earmarked for enhancing liquified natural gas infrastructure. This development aims to facilitate the receipt of gas from Texas for both regional distribution and export to Asian markets. Construction is slated to begin this year, with necessary permits expected to be issued in the coming month.

The modernization project includes plans to increase the port’s capacity, an upgrade that officials at the event indicated would enhance the ability to export goods from Sonora to Arizona.

During her tour of Sonora, Sheinbaum also made a stop in Bavispe, where she inaugurated a newly completed highway stretch of over 80 miles, connecting Bavispe with Nuevo Casas Grandes in Chihuahua through mountainous terrain.

In addition to the infrastructure developments, Sheinbaum announced a humanitarian aid shipment to Cuba planned for this week, consisting of food and supplies. This announcement comes in response to the Trump administration’s pressure on countries that continue oil shipments to Cuba. Sheinbaum emphasized, “We are exploring all diplomatic avenues because, as we have said, it is a fundamental humanitarian aid issue for the island.”
