Attorneys General Urge Congress for Refunds on Trump’s Illegal Tariffs

Attorneys General Demand Refunds for Trump-Era Tariffs

An alliance of eighteen attorneys general, spearheaded by Arizona’s Kris Mayes, is calling on Congress to enact a law that reimburses costs incurred due to tariffs imposed during President Donald Trump’s administration. This initiative follows the recent Supreme Court decision to nullify these tariffs.

Arizona, along with eleven other states, initially contested the tariffs’ legality through a lawsuit. In light of the Supreme Court’s ruling, Mayes and her counterparts are advocating for restitution of approximately $166 billion, the estimated sum paid by consumers and businesses nationwide.

“Donald Trump illegally taxed the people of Arizona and businesses across our state for nearly a year,” stated Mayes. She emphasizes the need for legislative measures that would ensure refunds are processed independently of the Trump administration’s control.

The letter addressed to Congress highlights the challenges faced by businesses and consumers in retrieving their funds. “Arizona businesses and consumers should not have to jump through complicated or costly legal hoops to get back the money the Trump administration took from them,” Mayes added.
