The U.S. military is actively preparing for potential ground operations in Iran, with forces gathering in the region. According to a report by the Washington Post, these operations could involve both traditional and special operations troops, though a full-scale invasion is not currently anticipated.
Decisions regarding these operations rest with President Donald Trump, who has not yet made a final decision, as noted by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt: “It’s the job of the Pentagon to make preparations in order to give the commander in chief maximum optionality,” she stated, emphasizing that no decision has been made.
Amid these developments, U.S. military presence in the region continues to grow. Recently, the Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group, led by the USS Tripoli, entered U.S. Central Command waters, having departed from Sasebo, Japan. This group includes the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit.
Additionally, the Pentagon has confirmed the deployment of elements from the 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East. Known for its rapid-response capabilities, the 82nd is based out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
This report follows a recent missile and drone attack by Iran on Prince Sultan Airbase in Saudi Arabia, resulting in injuries to 12 U.S. service members, with two sustaining serious injuries. The attack also caused damage to several U.S. aircraft, including an E-3 Sentry AWACS.
These events are part of Operation Epic Fury, a joint U.S. and Israeli military initiative against Iran, which began on February 28. The operation has so far resulted in 13 U.S. service member fatalities and nearly 300 injuries, though most of the wounded have returned to duty, according to U.S. Central Command.
