Michigan GOP Candidates Continue to Claim 2020 Election Was Stolen

John James

As Michigan’s gubernatorial race heats up, two Republican candidates maintain their stance that the 2020 presidential election was unfairly swayed in favor of Joe Biden. Their assertions have reignited discussions about the integrity of the election process.

At a recent event covered by the Midland Daily News, Rep. John James and state Sen. Aric Nesbitt expressed their beliefs that Michigan’s Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, a Democrat running for governor, played a pivotal role in Biden’s victory. Both candidates accused Benson of bias, with Nesbitt boldly stating, “Trump won Michigan” in the 2020 election.

John James, who was a Senate candidate in 2020, suggested that the election results were manipulated against him as well. He addressed his supporters, asking, “Who here believes that Jocelyn Benson … screwed Trump in 2020?” He continued, “Who here believes the president won in 2020? All right, well, if you do, I outperformed President Trump in 2020, and there are five judges that agree with you that Jocelyn Benson had her thumb on the scale in 2020.”

Despite these claims, official results showed Biden defeating Trump in Michigan by over 154,000 votes, while Sen. Gary Peters won against James by a margin of 92,000 votes. Trump’s persistent allegations of voter fraud and election tampering have been discredited by various legal challenges and independent reviews.

Following the 2020 election, Trump aimed criticism at Benson, alleging her support for mail-in voting was unlawful. This accusation led to armed demonstrators, favoring Trump, assembling outside Benson’s residence, chanting menacing slogans (source). Benson responded on X, stating, “The individuals gathered outside my home targeted me as Michigan’s chief election officer, but their threats were actually aimed at the 5.5 million Michigan citizens who voted in this fall’s election, seeking to overturn their will. They will not succeed in doing so.”

The political landscape in Michigan remains tense as James and Nesbitt prepare for the primary on August 4.
