Man Sentenced to 115 Years for Killing NYPD Officer in 2024 Shooting

Convicted Shooter of NYPD Officer Receives Lengthy Prison Sentence

In a significant courtroom decision, Guy Rivera has been sentenced to 115 years to life for the 2024 fatal shooting of New York City Police Officer Jonathan Diller. The verdict was delivered in a Queens courtroom filled with Diller’s family and fellow officers, sealing Rivera’s fate to spend his remaining days in prison.

Judge Michael Aloise emphasized the irreversible impact of Rivera’s actions, stating, “Your sentence to me was determined the second you pulled that trigger. It took me five minutes to calculate the numbers. It’s going to take you a lifetime to calculate the damage you caused.”

Rivera was convicted of aggravated manslaughter for the March 25, 2024, shooting, though he was not found guilty of murder. The incident unfolded when officers on patrol in Queens noticed a suspicious bulge in Rivera’s hoodie while he was a passenger in a parked car. As officers questioned the driver, Rivera suddenly fired a gun, hitting Diller below his bulletproof vest. The officer’s tragic death marked the first NYPD line-of-duty death in two years.

The aftermath of Officer Diller’s death was felt deeply, with thousands attending his wake and funeral on Long Island, including President Donald Trump. Diller’s passing became a pivotal moment in Trump’s 2024 campaign, which focused on themes of “law and order.”

President Trump, in a 2025 address to Congress, praised Diller as an “unbelievably wonderful person and a great officer.”

Prosecutors argued for a life sentence, citing Rivera’s criminal history and describing his actions as a “calculated, deliberate and evil choice.” Assistant District Attorney Kenneth Zawistowski implored the court, “We ask that you honor Jonathan’s life. We ask that you honor his sacrifice.”

Defense attorney Jamal Johnson contended that Rivera did not intend to kill and argued that the firearm discharged accidentally. He criticized the trial’s fairness and plans to appeal the conviction, highlighting perceived biases during the proceedings.

The emotional court session saw Officer Diller’s family delivering heart-wrenching statements. Stephanie Diller, the officer’s widow, expressed the profound loss her family faces, stating, “You took my husband and the life we were building. In a single moment, everything that was my life was gone.” Officer Diller’s mother, Fran, mourned her son’s promising future, expressing that her world has been “completely shattered.”

Patrick Hendry, president of the police officers’ union, commented on the sentence, saying it rightfully ensures Rivera will never walk free again, though he felt the manslaughter conviction fell short of delivering justice.

The case continues as Lindy Jones, an accomplice, awaits trial on weapons charges, with proceedings set to resume soon.
