University of Arizona Program Offers Unique Insights into Horse Racing Industry
For Tucson resident Tashua Spiess, the world of horse racing extends beyond the excitement seen on television screens. “Going to a track and watching races live is a whole different ballgame than watching it on TV,” she remarked, highlighting the unique thrill and “magical” experience of live races.
Spiess, a junior at the University of Arizona, initially arrived with aspirations to become a veterinarian. However, her passion for animal welfare led her to a newfound interest in horse racing. The university’s Race Track Industry Program, part of the College of Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences, played a pivotal role in transforming her love for horses into a viable career path.
Established in 1974 with backing from the American Quarter Horse Association, the Race Track Industry Program was designed to provide students with comprehensive knowledge of the horse racing industry. The program offers year-round coursework and features an annual seminar that draws industry leaders to the university. This unique opportunity allows students to delve deeply into the business aspects of horse racing.
