Parents Charged with Murder After 255-Pound 7-Year-Old Dies in Michigan

In a tragic case unfolding in Michigan, the parents of a seven-year-old boy who passed away weighing 255 pounds are facing serious charges. The Genesee County Prosecutor announced that the couple has been accused of murder, torture, and child abuse.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton commented on the situation, stating, “Clearly the parents were feeding the child improperly, to say the least. He wasn’t getting the nutrition he needed.”

The child, Casper O’Brien, died last November after emergency services were summoned to his Flint residence due to his cessation of breathing. Casper’s parents, Damien O’Brien, aged 40, and Jessica O’Brien, aged 41, have been charged with second-degree murder, torture, and three counts of second-degree child abuse.

Currently, the couple remains in custody without bond in Genesee County, located approximately an hour northwest of Detroit. A probable cause hearing is scheduled for Thursday.

According to the Genesee County Medical Examiner, the boy, who stood at 4 feet, 2.5 inches tall, was considered medically obese. His death was attributed to dilated cardiomyopathy, with his excessive weight being a significant factor. This condition, characterized by an enlarged and weakened heart, disrupts the heart’s ability to efficiently circulate blood, impacting various bodily systems, including the lungs.

The criminal complaints suggest that despite having healthcare access, Casper’s parents did not seek medical treatment for him.

Elias Fanous, representing Damien O’Brien, maintained, “innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law,” while refraining from speculating on the case. Jessica O’Brien’s attorney had not provided a comment by Monday.

Authorities suspect that Casper’s diet primarily consisted of snack foods. Leyton noted that the child, who was nonverbal and bedridden, suffered from severe bed sores and rashes.

The autopsy also revealed reports from law enforcement and Child Protective Services describing the home as cluttered with trash and confirmed that Casper was not enrolled in school. Leyton remarked on the hoarding situation, calling it “terrible.”

Additionally, one of the child abuse charges is related to the couple’s five-year-old daughter, who has been placed in foster care.

Records indicate that Casper’s last visit to his primary care provider was in February 2024, when he was treated for a cough, congestion, and metabolic disease. At the time, he weighed 104 pounds. His mother received advice on healthy eating and was referred to a pediatric endocrinologist, but the follow-up did not occur. The specifics of the metabolic disease were not detailed in the available medical records.

Leyton reflected on the case, saying, “It’s a very, very sad and tragic situation. I’ve been the prosecuting attorney for 22 years and I thought I’d seen it all but I’ve never seen anything quite like this.”
