ICE High Speed Pursuits Endanger Detroit Residents

ICE Agents Criticized for Endangering Detroit Residents During High-Speed Pursuits

In recent events, Detroit officials have raised concerns regarding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents endangering residents during high-speed pursuits through city streets. City Council Member Denzel McCampbell, representing District 7, highlighted incidents where ICE chased individuals through residential neighborhoods, resulting in injuries and property damage.

According to McCampbell, two separate chases in May and June led to one person breaking their knee and another being impaled by a fence post. These individuals were only suspected of being in the U.S. without legal status and were not suspected of committing a crime.

McCampbell emphasized the dangers posed by these pursuits in neighborhoods where residents, including children and pedestrians, could be at risk. Furthermore, the lack of accountability and transparency from ICE regarding these incidents has raised concerns among city officials.

McCampbell, along with District 6 Council Member Gabriela Santiago-Romero and District 7 Police Commissioner Victoria Camille, penned a letter to U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, urging DHS to halt vehicular pursuits, disclose their pursuit policy, provide details on the recent incidents, share investigation findings, and hold accountable agents who violate regulations.

Despite these concerns and requests for information, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has not responded to inquiries from city officials or provided a statement to address the allegations.
