U.S. Awards Raytheon $22.9 Billion Contract to Boost Tomahawk Production

The U.S. military has taken a significant step towards replenishing its high-tech weaponry stocks by awarding Raytheon, a unit of RTX, a massive $22.9 billion contract. This move is aimed at significantly increasing the production of Tomahawk missiles, addressing growing concerns over weapon inventory levels.

With the ongoing supply of arms to allies and the deployment of munitions in the Iran conflict, the U.S. has faced challenges in maintaining its inventory of air defense systems and precision-guided weapons. Acting Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao emphasized the urgency of the situation in a post on X, stating, “We called on industry to rapidly scale up munitions output, and RTX is delivering. This landmark Tomahawk contract ensures our warfighters continue to have the lethal firepower they need.”

Raytheon, in its announcement, revealed that the contract spans seven years and will allow for a dramatic increase in Tomahawk missile production, from the current 60 units per year to over 1,000 annually. The Tomahawk missile is a crucial component of the Navy’s surface fleet, offering long-range precision strike capabilities against land targets from both ships and submarines.

This contract finalizes a framework agreement initially reached between the U.S. military and Raytheon in February. Under the administration of President Donald Trump, the U.S. has been negotiating multi-year agreements with major defense contractors. These deals provide companies with the assurance needed to invest heavily in new facilities and equipment.

Earlier in the month, similar agreements were made to enhance the production of parts for Patriot and THAAD interceptor missiles, underscoring the military’s commitment to strengthening its defense capabilities.
