Innovative System Analyzes How Pet Owners Communicate with Their Animals
A new technological advancement from the University of Arizona is shedding light on the way pet owners converse with their furry companions. The Bray Lab has developed a sophisticated coding system aimed at understanding these interactions through audio analysis.
Named the Auditory-based Understanding of Relational Animal-directed Language (AURAL-Pet) system, this innovative tool analyzes audio snippets collected from various participants throughout the day. The goal is to decode how individuals engage with their pets, providing insights into these unique relationships.
The study incorporated data from 240 participants across four archival studies, scrutinizing 5,027 audio clips. These clips were captured using an app called the electronically activated recorder (EAR), which recorded participants in spontaneous 30- and 50-second intervals, ensuring the natural behavior of subjects was documented.
The AURAL-Pet system examines 30 different aspects of human-pet interaction. This includes the use of pet nicknames, owners referring to themselves in a parental capacity, and conversing with pets as though they were human beings.
Dara Jonkoski, a Ph.D. student and co-author of the study, explained the significance of these interactions. “We found that people were talking to their pets about 10% of the time in which they were speaking at all, so it really speaks to the importance that pets play in people’s lives,” Jonkoski noted.
Jonkoski further mentioned that this technology is expected to be instrumental in future research. It aims to provide a more accurate measurement of wellness outcomes in pet owners by offering a deeper understanding of the complex nuances within owner-pet interactions.
