Historic Win in Arizona: Democrat Nick Mansour Elected as State Treasurer
In a significant political shift, Nick Mansour has become the first Democrat to be elected as Arizona’s state treasurer in several decades. The Associated Press made this announcement on Thursday at 2:50 p.m., as Mansour secured 53.7% of the vote, surpassing his Republican rival, Elijah Norton.
This victory breaks a long-standing Republican hold on the treasurer’s office, with the last Democratic treasurer serving in the 1960s. The outcome reflects a broader trend of dissatisfaction with the Republican Party across the country.
Both candidates, Mansour and Norton, entered the race as newcomers to the role of treasurer. Norton’s prior attempt to secure a political position was in 2022, when he sought the GOP nomination for Congressional District 1 but was defeated by the incumbent, David Schweikert. In 2026, Norton successfully overcame Katherine Haley in the GOP primary, while Mansour’s path to the Democratic nomination was uncontested.
The election campaign saw intense competition with each candidate launching personal attacks. Norton alleged that Mansour was involved in unethical business dealings, pointing to his past employment with a company that settled a federal lawsuit over improper medical equipment reimbursements.
Conversely, Mansour criticized Norton’s business background, highlighting numerous lawsuits and complaints against Norton’s companies, questioning his suitability to handle financial responsibilities. Mansour threatened to take legal action against Norton over campaign ads, but Norton stood by his campaign statements, asserting their truthfulness.
