U.S. Treasury Targets Money Laundering Networks in Mexico with Sanctions
In a decisive move against financial crimes, the U.S. Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on a group of individuals in Mexico, citing their involvement in laundering money for criminal enterprises. This development closely follows a significant action by the Mexican government, which recently closed several casinos across the nation over similar allegations.
The U.S. has extended sanctions to 27 Mexican entities and individuals, further proposing measures to sever 10 Mexican casinos from the U.S. financial system. Notably, three of these casinos are located in Sonora, a state bordering Arizona, with establishments in San Luis Río Colorado, Agua Prieta, and Nogales.
According to the Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, these casinos are instrumental in funneling illicit funds, ultimately supporting the operations of the notorious Sinaloa cartel.
