Americans Express Heightened Anxiety Over Mounting Debts in 2026
As financial burdens weigh heavily on households across the United States, a new survey reveals a troubling trend of increasing anxiety and stress related to personal debt. Conducted by Achieve, a digital personal finance company, the survey highlights the emotional toll debt is taking on individuals.
The survey, which included responses from 2,000 Americans, shows a staggering 50% of participants feel anxiety due to their financial obligations. Nearly half of the respondents, 49%, reported experiencing sleep disturbances because of their debt, while 43% expressed a sense of hopelessness about their financial future.
In addition to anxiety and sleep issues, the survey uncovered that 39% of Americans carry a sense of embarrassment about their debt, despite the fact that approximately two-thirds of Americans are in a similar financial situation.
In collaboration with Achieve, Business Insider is aiming to shed light on the complexities of debt. The initiative will provide expert insights, options for managing debt, and stories of individuals who have successfully navigated their way out of financial difficulties.
This comprehensive approach underscores that while many Americans are grappling with debt, they are far from alone in their struggle.
