Israel Embarks on Major Military Upgrade with New Aircraft Squadrons
The Israeli government has given the green light to a significant expansion of its air force capabilities, announcing plans to purchase new aircraft from Lockheed Martin and Boeing. This strategic move involves acquiring a fourth squadron of F-35I fighters and a second squadron of F-15IA fighters, as confirmed by the Israeli Defense Ministry and military officials.
The financial scope of these acquisitions is estimated to reach tens of billions of shekels, encompassing not only the planes themselves but also their integration into the Air Force, alongside comprehensive support and logistics packages. However, the exact number of aircraft to be acquired remains unspecified.
A Decade-Long Defense Strategy
This procurement initiative is a foundational step in Israel’s long-term defense strategy, with a total budget of 350 billion shekels ($118 billion) earmarked for force-building efforts over the next ten years. As part of this plan, Israel has already secured a third squadron of F-35I fighters, comprising 25 aircraft, for $3 billion, funded by American aid. These planes are slated for delivery starting in 2028. Additionally, 25 F-15IA aircraft were ordered last December, backed by an $8.6 billion American aid package, with an option to double this order in the future.
Enhancing Technological Capabilities
The Israeli Defense Ministry underscores the necessity for the Air Force to achieve a “technological leap,” focusing on autonomous flight capabilities, advanced defense systems, and establishing military superiority both in air and space. This is part of a broader plan to maintain Israel’s defensive and offensive edge.
With ministerial approval secured, the Defense Ministry’s director-general has instructed Israel’s procurement delegation in the United States to finalize these deals with the American government and military officials.
Advanced Aircraft Specifications
The F-35I, a stealth aircraft tailored to Israel’s needs, can penetrate enemy defenses and operate effectively against sophisticated anti-aircraft systems. Its Israeli variant integrates locally developed electronic warfare, communication, and control systems. The addition of a fourth squadron will bring Israel’s F-35I fleet to around 100 aircraft, significantly expanding its current numbers.
Similarly, the F-15IA brings advanced capabilities with its heavy payload capacity, digital fly-by-wire system, and state-of-the-art radar, designed for complex and long-range missions. The acquisition of a second squadron will double Israel’s fleet of these aircraft to 50.
Strategic Considerations Amid Regional Tensions
The decision to enhance Israel’s air power comes in the context of heightened tensions with Tehran and insights gained from “Operation Lion Roar.” According to Israeli statements, these new squadrons are crucial to ensuring the Israeli Air Force retains its superiority in the region for decades to come.
