UK RAF to Reintroduce Nuclear Strike Capability with F-35A Jets

UK’s RAF to Revive Nuclear-Strike Capabilities with New Fighter Jets

The United Kingdom is set to bolster its defense strategy with a significant enhancement of its Royal Air Force (RAF) capabilities. Recently appointed Air Chief Marshal Harv Smyth, the Chief of the Air Staff, has emphasized the importance of reviving a nuclear-strike ability for the RAF, positioning it as a central goal in the years ahead.

During a keynote address at the 2025 DSEI UK show held in London, Smyth highlighted this development: “The RAF will soon have a capability to offer NATO credible and robust response options, because we have added it to our escalation ladder,” he stated. “A nuclear-empowered Lightning will enable the U.K. with this capability.”

In June 2025, the UK disclosed plans to procure 12 new F-35A fighter jets, marking a return to aircraft capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear armaments. This acquisition aligns the UK with other NATO members, such as the United States, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, and Turkey, that maintain similar dual-capable platforms.

The new F-35A jets will find their base at RAF Marham, with the UK aiming to secure a total of 138 F-35 aircraft throughout the program’s duration. This strategic move is expected to draw the attention of global adversaries. “I would expect our adversaries to take a key note of this change,” Smyth remarked, referencing nations like Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea as active participants in the current geopolitical landscape.

As the UK government aspires to elevate the nation’s status as a global defense leader, Smyth noted, “We enter the era of the defense dividend with a government that wants to make the U.K. a world defense superpower. In an uncertain future, air and space power will continue to be the nation’s first responder.”
