Michigan House Considers Bill to Improve Access to State Records
A new bill making its way through the Michigan House of Representatives aims to streamline access to state records by creating a centralized website for all reports released by state agencies. State Representative Joseph Aragona highlighted the challenges faced by citizens in locating these reports due to the decentralized systems used by different agencies.
Aragona, a Republican from Clinton Township, emphasized the need for a single platform to simplify the process for everyday citizens who want to stay informed about government activities. The proposed legislation has garnered support from open records advocates who believe that consolidating all reports in one searchable location will enhance government accountability.
Steve Delie, representing the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, underscored the benefits of having all reports in a unified and searchable format. He mentioned that this approach would significantly reduce the time and effort required for research, making it easier for ordinary citizens to monitor the actions of executive agencies.
The bill recently had its initial hearing before the House Regulatory Reform Committee, which is chaired by Representative Aragona. He expressed his intent to move swiftly on the legislation, aiming to advance it for a vote in the upcoming weeks.
