Arizona Budget Standoff: Hobbs, GOP Spar Over Negotiation Process

Stalemate in Arizona: Budget Talks Hit a Roadblock

Amid a standoff over Arizona’s budget, both Republican lawmakers and Governor Katie Hobbs find themselves in a deadlock, each waiting for the other to initiate the next step in negotiations. With both parties expressing readiness to resume discussions, the impasse continues.

Governor Hobbs paused talks weeks ago, pledging to veto any legislation until a budget proposal reached her desk. On Monday, Republicans delivered a budget plan but assert that Hobbs remains unresponsive.

In a statement on Friday, Hobbs indicated she is awaiting communication from the lawmakers, stating, “We are having conversations and this has turned into a he said/she said, which is why I don’t think it’s ever a good idea to litigate this in the press. Everyone’s trying to score their own political points. I have made my position clear. We are ready to get back to the negotiating table.”

Republican legislators intend to advance the budget to Hobbs in the coming week. However, the proposal has not garnered any support from Democratic lawmakers. While Governor Hobbs has acknowledged some favorable aspects within the proposal, she has also expressed strong opposition to several components.

Democratic members anticipate a veto from Hobbs, given the current disagreements. Meanwhile, Republicans emphasize their efforts to incorporate bipartisan elements into the budget and urge the governor to engage in the negotiation process.
