An unsettling incident has emerged from Thailand’s eastern coast, where an Australian national faces serious charges following the discovery of a teenager’s body. Authorities have linked the man to the tragic event that unfolded in the bustling tourist hub of Pattaya.
The young girl, aged 17, had been missing since Friday, last seen entering a condominium alongside Simon Peter Carman. This beach city, situated approximately 150 kilometers (93 miles) from Bangkok, became the focal point of investigations after Carman was observed leaving the premises solo, carrying a conspicuously large suitcase. Local law enforcement reported further sightings of Carman transporting the suitcase via motorbike to a remote location near the railway.
Authorities apprehended Carman early Saturday at a Bangkok airport, just before he could board a flight to Perth, Australia. Initially charged with the rape of a minor, Carman now faces additional charges of murder and body concealment after the suitcase, containing the teenager’s remains, was discovered shortly after his arrest.
The charge of premeditated murder could lead to the death penalty, according to local law enforcement. Despite the charges, Carman maintains his innocence, having secured legal representation. The precise date for his court appearance remains uncertain, as noted by Kanoknan Sooksri, a Pattaya Police investigator involved in the case.
Security footage, as reported by Thai media, allegedly captures Carman and the girl holding hands as they entered an elevator early Thursday. Later, the footage depicts Carman leaving with the suitcase on Thursday night.
In a video circulated by Thai media, Carman is seen during police questioning. He reportedly explained, “I was holding her down because she got crazy,” and recounted the girl threatening him while he attempted to give her 500 baht ($15). He described, “I had my wallet open to get the money out, and next thing there’s a knife to my face.”
