Health Experts Warn of Parasitic Infection Linked to Fresh Produce

Health Alert: Cyclosporiasis Outbreak in 31 States

In light of a recent outbreak of Cyclosporiasis, health officials are urging the public to thoroughly wash fresh produce before eating. This warning follows reports of the parasitic infection in 31 states, with Arizona among the affected areas.

Cyclosporiasis is known to cause discomforting symptoms such as stomach cramps, fatigue, and diarrhea, typically manifesting about a week after one is exposed to the parasite.

Dr. Frank Lovecchio from Valleywise Health shared insights on the source of this infection, stating that it originates from produce tainted with human feces. “The foods that it’s been linked to have included cilantro, basil, lettuce, raspberry, salad mixes, snow peas,” Lovecchio explained.

Arizona has reported at least 10 cases this year, with romaine lettuce being a common factor among the affected individuals. “The people in Arizona seem to report that it occurred from eating romaine lettuce,” Lovecchio noted.

While most individuals can overcome the infection without medical intervention, those with weakened immune systems or pre-existing conditions may require treatment. The primary concern associated with Cyclosporiasis is dehydration.

Despite its potential severity, the infection does not easily transmit from one person to another, reducing the risk of widespread contagion.
