Trial Looms for Seven in Hermosillo Store Fire Tragedy
In a significant development following the tragic fire at a Hermosillo discount store, a judge has determined there is adequate evidence to bring six individuals and one organization to trial. The incident, which occurred in November, claimed the lives of 24 people, including several children.
Authorities have identified a malfunctioning transmitter within the store as the probable cause of the explosion that led to the catastrophic blaze. In the aftermath, the community of Hermosillo has been vocal in their demand for a complete investigation and accountability.
The Sonoran Attorney General’s Office released a statement confirming that the charges brought against the defendants include homicide and the use of falsified documents. While the identities of the accused remain undisclosed, it is believed that former public officials linked to building safety are among those charged.
Meanwhile, two other individuals initially implicated in the case were not deemed to have sufficient evidence against them to proceed to trial. Those facing trial will not be held in custody but are prohibited from leaving the state of Sonora as proceedings continue.
As the community grapples with the tragedy, memorials and protests have become a common sight. Alma Paredes, seen lighting a candle at an altar outside Waldo’s, is one among many residents participating in these acts of remembrance and calls for justice. Rosa Linda Ríos Trasviña, mourning her daughter lost in the fire, exemplifies the personal grief experienced by the victims’ families.
Prominent activist Paty Duarte, who previously lost her son in a 2009 daycare fire, has been a vocal advocate for justice, leading marches and speaking out against perceived shortcomings in safety regulations and enforcement.
Visuals from the scene and related protests highlight the community’s ongoing struggle for accountability and change, underscoring the tragic impact of the fire on Hermosillo’s residents. Police presence remains a reminder of the severity of the incident and the continuing quest for justice.
