Knicks Triumph in Game 1 of NBA Finals with Brunson’s Heroics

The New York Knicks extended their impressive playoff winning streak, with Jalen Brunson, aptly dubbed Captain Clutch, leading the charge.
In a thrilling start to the 2026 NBA Finals, the Knicks emerged victorious over the San Antonio Spurs at Frost Bank Arena. The match was a challenging one, as the Spurs, having just completed a grueling 7-game series, seemed more in rhythm compared to the Knicks, who had taken a week-long break.
The game commenced with New York taking an early 14-7 lead, but the Spurs quickly retaliated with a 20-5 surge, ending the first quarter on top.
A tense moment unfolded when Landry Shamet’s collision with Harrison Barnes resulted in Jalen Brunson sustaining a knee injury, forcing him to leave the court temporarily for medical attention.
Despite trailing 27-19 as the second quarter began, the Knicks maintained a close contest with the Spurs. Thanks to Julian Champagnie’s impressive performance, including five three-pointers, they ended the half at 55-48.
Upon his return, Brunson initially struggled, managing only eight points. However, the third quarter saw the Knicks regain their playoff form, closing the period tied at 76-76 after a Spurs advantage pushed them to 63-50.
The final quarter was dominated by the Knicks, with the Spurs enjoying only a brief lead. Brunson’s crucial three-pointer and a jumper in the final 37 seconds solidified their position. OG Anunoby further secured the win by making all his free throws, leaving the Spurs facing a 10-point deficit they couldn’t overcome.
Brunson’s stellar 13-point contribution in the last quarter marked their 12th consecutive postseason win, a feat that ranks second in NBA history.
Following the 105-95 triumph, Brunson expressed his focus on the upcoming game. “I think we know what we have to do,” Brunson said after the game. “I think we are a pretty together group. Be able to trust each other and still have each other’s back and know that we just have to keep chipping away, chipping away. It’s just a credit to the mentality that we have as a team. But we can’t just be satisfied with that. We have a long way to go and we have a lot of things to do to be better, but happy we came away with a win.”
The match was not without its share of off-court excitement. A fan intruded onto the court during the fourth quarter to capture a selfie, which Victor Wembanyama seemed to enjoy, while Mitchell Robinson’s reaction was priceless.
In a testament to New York’s spirited fans, only a handful were arrested in the post-game celebrations outside Madison Square Garden.
