Meta Platforms Faces Major Trial Amidst Allegations of Harmful Practices
In a significant legal confrontation, Meta Platforms will be defending itself in a federal court in Oakland, California this week. The case, which has drawn national attention, involves attorneys general from California, Colorado, Kentucky, and New Jersey who are collectively seeking substantial financial reparations and operational changes to Facebook and Instagram.
This trial is part of a broader legal action initiated in 2023 when twenty-nine states filed lawsuits against the tech behemoth over concerns related to child safety and privacy. The remaining states are scheduled to have their cases heard subsequently. Additionally, Meta is contending with multiple lawsuits in various state courts.
The crux of the lawsuit is the accusation that Meta has been a contributing factor to the youth mental health crisis. The plaintiffs argue that the company has intentionally designed its platforms to foster addiction among younger users and has regularly collected data from children under 13 without obtaining parental consent, contravening federal law.
Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman emphasized the severity of the allegations, stating, “This week, we’re in court with the largest consumer protection lawsuit in American history. We’ll show a jury that Meta concealed what it knew about the harm its products cause young people because looking away was more profitable.”
Meta, however, stands firm in its defense, expressing confidence in its protective measures for teens. The company stated, “We are proud of our record in protecting teens on our platforms and the amount of effort that we’ve put into developing protections over the years, even before these cases were ever filed, and continuing to the present day. We look forward to showing the judge and the jury those facts in court.”
Presiding over the trial will be U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, an appointee of President Barack Obama known for her experience with complex cases concerning Big Tech. Her past involvements include Elon Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI and the Epic Games vs. Apple case regarding app store practices.
This trial represents yet another chapter in the ongoing series of lawsuits targeting Meta and other social media giants like Google’s YouTube, TikTok, and Snap. These legal challenges center on claims that these platforms are harmful to young people, unlawfully gather their data, and are deliberately designed to be addictive.
