Palestinian Doctor Held by Israel Faces Critical Health Concerns

Palestinian Doctor’s Detention Sparks Concerns Amid Allegations of Abuse

In the midst of ongoing tensions between Israel and Hamas, the plight of a detained Palestinian doctor has drawn international attention. Hussam Abu Safiya, the former director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza, was captured by Israeli forces 18 months ago, and his lawyer now reports he is in dire health due to alleged mistreatment during his confinement.

Abu Safiya became a prominent figure during the Israel-Hamas conflict, advocating for medical workers under siege. His arrest in December 2024 followed an 85-day blockade of the hospital he led. Despite the absence of formal charges, Israeli authorities suspect him of collaborating with Hamas, a claim refuted by his colleagues and international aid organizations.

In a recent visit documented by Physicians for Human Rights Israel, Abu Safiya was reportedly frail, with visible injuries, and struggled to maintain his balance. “He had recent head injuries around his eyes, ears, and neck and experienced difficulty breathing,” stated his lawyer, Nasser Odeh. Appeals have been made to transfer him to a different facility to ensure better care.

These developments coincide with a broader critique of Israel’s treatment of Palestinian prisoners, which has intensified since the start of the war in October 2023. Human rights groups and the United Nations have highlighted patterns of abuse within Israeli detention centers, a charge that the Israel Prison Service denies.

The Prison Service insists that all detainees receive appropriate medical attention and are treated in accordance with the law. “The Israel Prison Service rejects allegations of abuse, torture, starvation, or denial of medical treatment,” they declared, maintaining the confidentiality of specific cases.

The conflict, which erupted on October 7, 2023, after a Hamas-led attack on southern Israel, has resulted in substantial casualties on both sides. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, over 73,000 Palestinians have died in the Israeli offensive, although these numbers do not differentiate between civilians and combatants.

As the situation remains tense, the international community continues to monitor the conditions of detainees like Abu Safiya amidst calls for transparency and adherence to human rights standards.
