Search Continues for Man Struck by Lightning on Arizona’s Tallest Peak

Lightning Strikes Arizona’s Highest Peak, Rescuers Search for Injured Hiker

Amidst the rugged terrain of Arizona’s highest elevation, rescue teams continue their efforts to locate a hiker who was reportedly struck by lightning on Humphreys Peak Trail. This incident has drawn attention to the unpredictable weather conditions that can occur in the region.

On Wednesday afternoon, one of the two men affected by the lightning strike managed to descend the mountain, meeting with search and rescue personnel. The second individual involved, although conscious, remains on the trail due to his unknown condition, according to the Coconino County Sheriff’s Department.

Department spokesperson Jon Paxton described the challenging conditions atop the mountain: “It is completely socked in right now. The top of it. If you go down into Flagstaff, it’s just partly cloudy.” This weather has complicated rescue operations, grounding helicopters and hampering aerial support.

As search and rescue crews navigate these obstacles, the incident highlights the potential dangers faced by hikers on Mount Humphreys, the tallest peak in Arizona. Efforts continue as teams work to ensure the safety and recovery of the stranded individual.
