Submerged Truck Found in Drought-Stricken Lake Powell Reveals Remains

Submerged Truck Reveals Human Remains Amid Drought at Lake Powell

Amidst ongoing drought conditions, a submerged pickup truck has come to light at Lake Powell, situated near the Arizona-Utah border, revealing human remains. These remains are linked to a vehicle that belonged to a 54-year-old man missing since December 2023, although identification is still pending and the case remains under investigation.

The discovery occurred over the Labor Day weekend when visitors noticed the truck just below the waterline at Lone Rock Beach in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Utah. Authorities successfully extracted the vehicle from the lake on Wednesday.

Lieutenant Alan Alldredge of the Kane County Sheriff’s Office highlighted the significant impact of the persistent drought, noting that Lake Powell’s water levels have decreased by approximately 20 feet since the man was last reported missing. “We have had several bad years,” Alldredge mentioned regarding the lake’s conditions.

The last known sighting of the truck’s owner was on December 1, 2023, at a store in Kanab, Utah.

This incident is not isolated, as similar discoveries have been made at Lake Mead, another body of water affected by the drought within the Colorado River system. In 2022, multiple sets of human remains were also found at Lake Mead, located over 300 miles west on the Arizona-Nevada border.

Among the discoveries at Lake Mead was a man who had died from a gunshot wound, found inside a rusted barrel in a harbor area. Authorities have yet to identify these remains.
