In a surprising twist, President Donald Trump has opted not to send U.S. military forces into San Francisco, a decision influenced by discussions with local leaders and tech industry giants. This move stands in contrast to his usual approach of deploying troops in cities led by Democrats that he criticizes.

Although cities like Chicago and Washington D.C. have seen Trump’s aggressive military stance, San Francisco has been spared due to cordial interactions between Trump, the city’s mayor, and prominent business figures. According to a report by the Associated Press, the president’s change of heart followed a call from San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie and dialogues with tech leaders, including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff.

“I got a great call from some incredible people, some friends of mine, very successful people,” Trump stated, mentioning the tech executives. He added, “They told him San Francisco was working hard to reduce crime. So we are holding off that surge, everybody. And we’re going to let them see if they can do it.”

Interestingly, crime statistics in San Francisco were already improving before Trump’s proposed military intervention, as reported on the city’s crime dashboard. The change in Trump’s decision seems to be the result of effective communication and influence from affluent individuals who managed to convey the unnecessary nature of such an action.

Trump also shared that he had a positive interaction with Mayor Lurie, stating, “I told the mayor, I love what you’re doing, I respect it, and I respect the people that are doing it.” Lurie reportedly requested the president to reconsider his military plans “very nicely.”

Politico highlights that this outcome was seen as a significant achievement for Lurie, a moderate Democrat, demonstrating the potential effectiveness of a less confrontational approach with Trump. Lurie’s strategic engagement with influential CEOs played a crucial role in averting potential federal intervention.

For Lurie, this moment was a testament to his ability to navigate the political landscape effectively. His strategy of focusing on public safety statistics and building relationships with key industry leaders proved instrumental. It was a rare moment of relief for San Francisco residents, who were bracing for what many perceived as an impending federal action.

However, this incident underscores a broader issue: the necessity for city leaders to placate the federal government to maintain local safety. This dynamic raises concerns about the balance of power and the need for systemic change.
