Victor Wembanyama has been making waves in the NBA with his stellar performance at the start of the season, marking an impressive comeback after a challenging period last year.
Wembanyama, a pivotal player for the San Antonio Spurs, has scored 100 points in the first three games of the season—a first for the franchise. Additionally, he is the inaugural player in NBA history to achieve 100 points and 15 blocks in this timeframe.
In the Spurs’ recent home opener, Wembanyama contributed significantly with 31 points, 14 rebounds, and six blocks, leading to a 118-107 victory against Brooklyn. Addressing the crowd of 19,016, he expressed his gratitude: “I missed the energy so much. I knew you guys would show up, so we had to show up for you all.”
Following a season limited to 46 games due to a serious health issue, Wembanyama underwent surgery in March 2025 to remove a blood clot in his right shoulder. This health scare inspired him to embark on a global adventure during the summer, visiting the Shaolin Monastery in China, exploring the NASA Space Center in Houston, playing soccer in Costa Rica, and hosting a chess tournament in Le Chesnay, France.
Despite his travels, Wembanyama maintained his training routine, preparing diligently for his third NBA season. This preparation has clearly paid off, as evidenced by his record-breaking 40-point performance in the season opener against Dallas and a 29-point game in New Orleans.
Brooklyn center Nic Claxton remarked on Wembanyama’s unique abilities: “It’s really something we’ve never seen before. His touch. His length. He can get his shot off whenever. It’s a super tough cover.”
During the game against the Nets, Wembanyama was 10 for 15 on free throws, bringing his season total to 59 attempts, a significant increase from his average of 4.1 attempts last season. Spurs fans enthusiastically supported their star player with chants of “WemVP” each time he approached the free throw line.
The excitement in San Antonio is palpable as the Spurs aim to end a six-year postseason drought. Wembanyama’s creation of the super fan group, the Jackals, has further energized the fanbase, leading many of the cheers during games. Wembanyama acknowledged the fans’ support: “I’m not expecting less from the fans here. Just like in the preseason, the Jackals songs sound great. I think there is some work to do with coordinating the in-arena chants and also the rest of the fanbase is also going to learn the chants in the future.”
As the season progresses, Wembanyama and the Spurs are committed to maintaining this momentum. “We’re right where we should be,” he stated confidently.
