Sen. Mark Kelly Discusses ACA Subsidy Challenges with Phoenix Workers

Senator Mark Kelly Addresses Rising Health Care Premiums in Arizona

Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona recently engaged with Phoenix workers grappling with the steep rise in their health insurance premiums this year. During the discussions, Kelly expressed skepticism about Senate Republicans supporting the renewal of subsidies that previously helped mitigate these costs, at least until 2026.

Last October, Democrats initiated a federal government shutdown, highlighting the potential financial impact on Americans if Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies were not extended. In contrast, Republican legislators contended that the subsidy issue should be resolved independently of budgetary discussions.

While some House Republicans have joined Democrats in voting to extend ACA subsidies earlier this month, Kelly noted that the proposal is currently stagnant in the Senate due to a lack of Republican backing.

“They can’t afford their health care anymore. I’ve talked to a lot of folks from down in Yuma to Flagstaff and every place in between. You heard a guy in here, right? His ACA premium went from $500 to $2,000 a month,” Kelly explained.

Despite acknowledging that some Republican senators quietly support the subsidy renewal, Kelly admitted the number is insufficient to secure a majority vote. He remarked, “We’re trying to bring some help, you know, but there has to be some serious legislation passed to try to fix this, you know, mid-year. It’s challenging. I’m going to be honest. It’s not likely.”
