New York City’s Mayor Celebrates 100 Days of Progressive Reforms
As Zohran Mamdani marks his first 100 days as New York City’s 111th mayor, he reflects on significant strides toward a more equitable city. A Democratic Socialist, Mamdani has prioritized affordability, public trust, and service for working-class citizens since his inauguration on January 1, 2026.
Early Achievements in Childcare and Safety
Under Mamdani’s leadership, the city secured funding for an expansive childcare initiative. In collaboration with the state, the 2-Care program aims to offer free childcare for 2-year-olds and strengthen the existing 3K system. Governor Kathy Hochul has already allocated $8 billion to childcare infrastructure, setting the stage for universal access. In a creative twist, Mamdani recruited Cardi B to judge a contest for the program’s theme song via Instagram.
Mamdani’s administration also adeptly managed two major winter storms, mobilizing over 1,400 snow shovelers. Workers earned up to $30 per hour, crucial for clearing thousands of crosswalks, hydrants, and bus stops. The administration set a precedent with a 24-hour Code Blue, opening warming centers and shelters for vulnerable citizens.
Enhanced Public Services and Inclusivity
Efforts to expand healthcare and essential services have been a cornerstone of Mamdani’s agenda. Initiatives include the opening of a pet-friendly family shelter, investment in mental health, a $1 million vaccination campaign, and expanded overdose prevention services. The administration also returned $8.5 million in stolen wages to workers through social media.
He launched the Office of LGBTQIA+ Affairs and appointed Taylor Brown, the first openly transgender city agency leader, reinforcing commitment to inclusive governance.
Safeguarding Immigrant Rights and Public Safety
Mamdani’s administration has fortified New York’s sanctuary status by launching a multilingual “Know Your Rights” campaign and signing Executive Order 13 to limit ICE access to city properties. Public safety measures include historically low crime rates and the creation of a Deputy Mayor for Community Safety. Mamdani also ended criminal enforcement for low-level e-bike violations.
Redefining Housing and Tenant Rights
Addressing housing affordability, Mamdani reinstated the Office to Protect Tenants, appointing activist Cea Weaver as its leader. He initiated “Rental Ripoff” hearings to expose landlord malpractices and formed task forces, SPEED and LIFT, to expedite affordable housing development. The administration intervened in Pinnacle Realty’s bankruptcy, securing $30 million in tenant repairs.
Transportation and Fiscal Reforms
While free city buses remain a long-term goal, Mamdani has already restarted paused city projects and allocated significant funds for public restrooms. His preliminary budget emphasizes youth and education, proposing new taxes on high earners to close budget gaps.
He abolished directives from the prior administration and established the Office of Mass Engagement to strengthen community ties. Judicial appointments have been made, reflecting his imprint on the city’s legal framework.
