In a startling sequence of events, a Texas man allegedly attempted to attack the home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman with a Molotov cocktail, driven by opposition to artificial intelligence. Authorities reported that the suspect, Daniel Moreno-Gama, traveled from Texas to San Francisco with the intent to harm Altman, highlighting the increasing tension surrounding AI technology.
According to police, the 20-year-old Moreno-Gama targeted Altman’s residence at around 4 a.m. on Friday, setting fire to an external gate before fleeing the scene. Shortly thereafter, he reportedly threatened to burn down the OpenAI headquarters, which is located approximately three miles away. This incident was confirmed by law enforcement officials on Monday.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
Moreno-Gama faces multiple charges, including two counts of attempted murder and attempted arson, as stated by San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins. These charges relate to his alleged attempts to harm both Altman and a security guard at the CEO’s residence. The potential state penalties range from 19 years to life imprisonment.
In addition, federal prosecutors have charged Moreno-Gama with possession of an unregistered firearm and using explosives to damage property. These federal charges could result in sentences of up to 10 years and 20 years, respectively. Currently, Moreno-Gama awaits his initial court appearance, and it remains unclear if he has legal representation.
Opposition to AI and Documented Threats
Upon his arrest, Moreno-Gama was found with a document outlining his anti-AI stance, which included threats against Altman. This document expressed grave concerns about AI’s potential risks to humanity, referring to “our impending extinction.” FBI San Francisco’s Acting Special Agent in Charge, Matt Cobo, remarked, “This was not spontaneous. This was planned, targeted and extremely serious.”
Surveillance footage from the night of the incident reportedly shows Moreno-Gama, clad in dark clothing, approaching Altman’s property and launching the incendiary device. Further video evidence from OpenAI’s headquarters allegedly captures him attempting to break into the building by smashing glass doors with a chair, while threatening to “burn it down and kill anyone inside.”
Community and Institutional Responses
Following the attack, advocacy groups have condemned the violence. Anthony Aguirre, CEO of the Future of Life Institute, stated, “violence and intimidation of any kind have no place in the conversation about the future of AI.” Meanwhile, PauseAI confirmed Moreno-Gama’s minor online presence in their forums, though they emphasize he was not associated with their organization.
In a personal response to the events, Sam Altman shared a photo of his family in a blog post, expressing hope that it might deter future attacks. He acknowledged the justified “fear and anxiety about AI,” but urged for a reduction in “rhetoric and tactics” to prevent similar incidents, both figuratively and literally.
AI Debate Intensifies
This incident comes amid a broader debate regarding AI’s impact on society, especially with tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT gaining prominence. A recent Stanford University report highlights that while many see AI’s benefits as outweighing its drawbacks, there is a growing unease and lack of trust in institutions managing this technology.
