In a significant development in international law enforcement, Dubai authorities have apprehended a man believed to be a major figure in organized crime. The arrest of Daniel Kinahan, reported by Irish media, marks a pivotal moment in efforts to dismantle Ireland’s notorious criminal networks.
According to the Garda Síochána, Ireland’s national police service, an Irish national in his late 40s was detained on Wednesday under an Irish court warrant. The charges involve serious organized crime activities. The police emphasized their unwavering commitment to pursue individuals allegedly involved in significant criminal enterprises globally.
Details from Dubai Police corroborate the arrest of an “Irish fugitive” implicated in a worldwide organized crime syndicate, though they refrained from naming Kinahan specifically. However, Ireland’s national broadcaster, RTE, has verified his identity as the individual detained.
The High Court in Dublin previously identified Kinahan, residing in the United Arab Emirates, as a key player in a crime organization linked to international drug trafficking and firearms offenses.
The ongoing feud between the Kinahan cartel and the Hutch gang has resulted in 18 fatalities in Ireland since 2015. A notable incident was the 2016 shooting of David Byrne, a Kinahan associate, at a boxing event in Dublin’s Regency Hotel, a plot thought to target Kinahan himself.
Kinahan’s trajectory saw him relocating from Spain to Dubai. Known for co-founding the boxing management firm MTK Global, he has been associated with prominent figures such as former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury. Kinahan has attempted to orchestrate matches for Fury, including a high-profile fight against Anthony Joshua that did not come to fruition.
In a bid to destabilize the Kinahan crime empire, the U.S. government announced a reward of $5 million in 2022 for information leading to the gang’s financial collapse or the arrest and conviction of its leaders.
