Former DUP Leader Jeffrey Donaldson Faces Rape and Abuse Charges in Trial

Former DUP Leader Faces Rape Trial Over Decades-Old Allegations

In a significant legal development, the former head of Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) is standing trial for alleged sexual offenses that stretch back over 40 years. Jeffrey Donaldson, who stepped down as the leader of Northern Ireland’s most prominent unionist party, is facing serious charges in a case that has captured public attention.

The 63-year-old has pleaded not guilty to a series of charges, including one count of rape, four counts of gross indecency, and 13 indecent assault charges. These allegations involve two women who claim Donaldson abused them between 1985 and 2008, as disclosed by Prosecutor Rosemary Walsh during the opening statements at Newry Crown Court.

Walsh informed the jury that the alleged victims reported the incidents to police over two years ago, describing the events as “difficult and traumatic” experiences from their childhood. In March 2024, Donaldson resigned as leader of the DUP and also vacated his seat in the U.K. Parliament following his arrest.

Donaldson’s sudden resignation came as a shock to the DUP, particularly after his significant role in ending the party’s boycott of Northern Ireland’s semi-autonomous government. He had recently succeeded in obtaining concessions on Britain’s post-Brexit trading arrangements with the European Union.

During his tenure from 2021 to 2023, Donaldson was a leading figure in promoting the unionist agenda to uphold Northern Ireland’s ties with the United Kingdom. The allegations against him include claims that he inappropriately touched the victims, who were allegedly around primary school age at the time. The older victim, identified in court as Complainant B, asserted that the abuse persisted for several years.

Complainant B also recounted an encounter arranged through a church where Donaldson allegedly expressed regret for “what had happened in the past.” In contrast, Donaldson told the police that the accusations were “unbelievable” and denied any sexual misconduct.

Additionally, Donaldson’s wife, Eleanor, faces accusations of aiding and abetting her husband’s alleged crimes. However, she is not attending the trial after being deemed unfit to stand trial due to mental health issues, as ruled by Judge Paul Ramsey. The jury will assess her case based on the facts presented, though she will not face conviction or punishment. The trial is anticipated to continue for up to a month.
