On November 6 and 7, the Brennan Center will host a conference in collaboration with the Northwestern University Law Review in Chicago. Titled The Power of State Constitutional Rights, this event will bring together judges, scholars, and advocates to discuss how state courts are advancing voting rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and other critical issues. Attendees will explore the “unique rights” protected solely by state constitutions, such as those influenced by John Locke’s principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This conference aims to expand the understanding of constitutional rights, with keynote speaker Jeffrey S. Sutton, an expert on state constitutional law, emphasizing the often unnoticed role of American federalism.
Partnership for Southern Impact
In another significant development, the Brennan Center has launched the Partnership for Southern Impact in collaboration with Fisk University, a historically Black university in Nashville. The South, a region characterized by rapid growth and economic dynamism, faces challenges such as gerrymandering and voter suppression. Recognizing these challenges, the partnership seeks to support state legislators in developing effective policies. Social scientists, lawyers, and communications specialists are collaborating to identify solutions and promote reforms in areas like prison conditions, voting rights, and governance strategies.

Panels focused on key policy areas, demonstrating how states can protect election systems and address the complexities of mid-decade redistricting.
