In today’s political climate, where authoritarian tendencies threaten democratic values, the urgency of collective action has never been clearer. Across the nation, efforts to criminalize dissent and suppress marginalized communities are unfolding, posing a significant challenge to the fabric of democracy.
The current climate is characterized by a strategic, deliberate push toward authoritarian governance, where actions against protest and the marginalization of Black and poor individuals are becoming increasingly common. This scenario is not just a series of isolated events but rather orchestrated efforts that demand a powerful response rooted in community and collective strength.
With over two decades of experience, I have played a pivotal role in movements, campaigns, and media initiatives aimed at redistributing power. My work has focused on bridging the gap between policy, culture, and economic influence, striving to transform visibility into actionable power for communities.
My endeavors lie at the intersection of conceptual frameworks and tangible action, advising key figures on strategies that lead to meaningful change. Now, I am creating platforms for strategic engagement, launching an advisory service that aids movement leaders, philanthropists, and businesses to confront adversarial forces stifling progress and equity.
In 2026, my book From Presence to Power, published by One World at Penguin Random House, will offer insights from the frontlines of social activism. Additionally, Freedom Talks, a monthly conversation I am hosting with NewsOne, will feature thought leaders who are not just commenting on the current events but actively reshaping them.
This initiative aims to foster a multiracial democracy where Black lives thrive, countering the forces that gain from societal disparities. The series will spotlight organizers, journalists, business leaders, strategists, and culture-makers who are driving change.
A show for builders, not bystanders
Every 30-minute episode will be concise and practical, designed to disseminate ideas effectively across various platforms. We will explore critical questions such as the beneficiaries of the current system, potential leverage points, and strategies to make social justice profitable rather than harmful.
Our discussions will emphasize an integrated approach, covering policy, cultural, legal, and economic aspects to ensure a holistic fight against injustice. We will also hold accountable those who enable the current system, from corporations to financiers.
A word on freedom
The concept of “freedom” serves as our guiding principle, not as a commercialized slogan but as a practical reality ensuring safety, opportunity, and rights. Achieving this requires both imagination and enforcement, as well as a commitment to addressing the current threats to our liberties.
Through Freedom Talks, we will confront these challenges, focusing on future solutions rather than nostalgia for past systems that failed many. The series will be a platform for analyzing obstacles and opportunities, advocating for systemic change.
Beyond the show
In addition to the show, I will publish articles on NewsOne that connect current affairs to actionable strategies. Short explainer videos will further break down complex issues, aiding in the understanding and application of power dynamics.
My newsletter, How We Win, continues to provide insights into overcoming right-wing power consolidations by building robust infrastructures. Recent posts have examined media control and the need for independent narrative structures.
