A shocking incident on Chicago’s L train has led to terrorism charges against a 50-year-old man. Lawrence Reed is accused of setting a woman on fire, an act that federal prosecutors have labeled as terrorism.

CNN reports that the terrifying event unfolded on a Monday night. Surveillance footage captured a man, identified as Reed, pouring what appeared to be gasoline on a 26-year-old woman. This occurred while the train was in motion, with Reed initially seen sitting behind her.

After the woman attempted to escape to the back of the train, Reed pursued her and ignited the liquid, causing the woman to catch fire. The train stopped downtown shortly after, allowing the victim to exit. She collapsed on the platform as Reed walked away from the scene.

“The surveillance video is difficult to watch and is very disturbing, as a young woman was set ablaze and tried to put herself out, while other passengers got out of the way or watched,” remarked Andrew Boutros, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, during a news conference. Thanks to the intervention of two good Samaritans, the flames engulfing the woman were extinguished.

The victim was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, with severe burns covering her head and body. Her identity remains undisclosed. WGN9 revealed that Reed was seen earlier filling a small bottle with gasoline at a Citgo station, which matched the bottle used in the attack. When arrested, Reed had visible fire-related injuries on his hands and was wearing attire consistent with the surveillance footage.

Reed displayed erratic behavior during and after his arrest. He reportedly spat on federal agents and was disruptive in court, repeatedly shouting, “I plead guilty! I plead guilty!” U.S. Magistrate Judge Laura McNally presided over the hearing, during which Reed declared his intention to represent himself, also claiming to be a Chinese citizen, despite being born in the United States.

Charged with a terrorist attack on a mass transportation system, Reed faces a possible life sentence if convicted. The involvement of state-level charges remains uncertain.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy weighed in on the incident via social media, linking it to broader concerns about safety in urban areas. He referenced the tragic case of Iryna Zarutska, who was fatally stabbed on a light rail in Charlotte, as a cautionary tale. Despite these high-profile incidents, statistical data indicates a decline in violent crime rates.

Some argue that mental health issues may be a common factor in such crimes, suggesting that a more effective response might include restoring federal funding for mental health services and improving security measures on public transportation, rather than attributing blame to political leadership.
