FAA Guidance Advances Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport Terminal Plans
Recent modifications to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) guidelines have expedited the timeline for constructing a new terminal at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. Originally slated for completion in 2036, the project’s timeline has now been adjusted to aim for an earlier opening in 2033.
The FAA has deemed the environmental impact statement from 2006 adequate for the terminal’s advancement. This decision supports the airport’s growing demand as highlighted by Assistant Aviation Director Daver Malik.
“So the airlines continue to expand there. They’re continuing to grow. And with our future projections, we are pretty much running out of room to support that growth here for our airlines and also for our community,” Malik explained.
He further noted the importance of the FAA’s comprehensive evaluation process, stating, “This is where the FAA looks at sort of comprehensively at the scope of what the airport is planning to do and how it impacts existing facilities, the surrounding areas in the community, and makes a determination if that project or that development can proceed.”
With an increase in both airline services and passenger numbers, the necessity for enhanced infrastructure at the airport is pressing. Malik pointed out that a significant challenge will be to ensure that the new development minimizes disruptions to current operations.
