DHS Denies ICE Will Arrest at Marine Graduation on Parris Island

Amidst growing concerns, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has firmly denied rumors suggesting that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents will be conducting arrests at the upcoming Marine graduation ceremonies at Parris Island, South Carolina.

“This is FALSE,” a spokesperson from the DHS confirmed to Military.com. “ICE will not be making arrests at the basic training graduation in Parris Island, SC.”

The conjecture stemmed from a notice on the Marine Corps’ Recruit Depot (MCRD) Parris Island website. The statement mentioned the presence of federal law enforcement for enhanced security screenings during Recruit Family and Graduation Days, raising questions about whether ICE’s involvement indicated a broader enforcement strategy.

The DHS did not provide specific details on the number of ICE agents expected or whether similar measures would be implemented at other military graduation events. Questions also remain about past occurrences of federal law enforcement presence at such ceremonies.

Federal Security Efforts Explained

According to a report by NBC News, the increased security measures are due to concerns that some family members of the recruits may lack legal documentation, necessary for entry to military bases like Parris Island. This includes proper identification such as passports, REAL IDs, or birth certificates.

“While the Marine Corps routinely coordinates with federal partners on security matters, this is the first time in recent memory that federal law enforcement agencies have supported base access operations at Parris Island in this capacity,” stated a spokesperson for MCRD Parris Island to NBC News.

The spokesperson also encouraged attendees to ensure they have proper identification and to minimize the number of items they bring to facilitate smoother entry procedures.

Recently, ICE agents have been seen assisting in U.S. airports, addressing security duties by conducting ID checks amidst increased passenger lines and wait times, as previously reported by Military.com.

The Parris Island graduation is scheduled for Friday, April 3, with family activities beginning two days prior. MCRD Parris Island typically hosts around 46 graduation ceremonies annually.
