Navy Special Warfare Sailor Dies During Parachute Training in California

Tragic Loss in Navy Training Exercise in California

A recent Navy training exercise in California has resulted in the death of a special warfare sailor, highlighting the inherent risks of military training. The incident occurred during a parachute training event in Porterville.

Special Warfare Boat Operator 2nd class Noah Tobin, who was assigned to Special Boat Team 20, tragically lost his life on Tuesday. The Naval Special Warfare Command confirmed the incident, noting that Tobin was participating in the Naval Parachute Course, which is operated by the Naval Special Warfare Advanced Training Command. This command is renowned for training Navy SEAL operators.

Fatalities in special warfare training, particularly involving parachuting, are not common. The last recorded parachuting death in the community was in 2023, when Chief Special Warfare Operator Michael Ernst passed away after a “military freefall training accident” in Arizona. The Navy investigated the incident but did not release the findings.

“We mourn the loss of our sailor, and our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time,” said a Naval Special Warfare spokesperson. They also mentioned that the Navy is providing grief counseling and support to Tobin’s family and teammates.

Noah Tobin enlisted in the Navy in 2021 from California and completed boot camp in December of the same year. He graduated from special warfare training in 2023, earning his Enlisted Special Warfare Combatant Crewman qualification.

His first assignment was with an “East Coast-based Naval Special Warfare Unit,” starting in May 2024. Though specific units are not disclosed in public records, this description aligns with Special Boat Team 20, which is based in Virginia.

Special warfare boat operators, like Tobin, are adept sailors who manage small watercraft to support Navy SEALs. Their duties include clandestine maritime operations and weapons support. Special Boat Team 20 is primarily engaged in coastal operations and is described by the Navy as “true warriors — highly trained, disciplined and distinguished.”

Following the incident, the training command responsible for the exercise has temporarily halted parachute training to conduct a safety stand-down. The cause of the incident remains unknown, and investigations are currently underway.
