Protests Erupt in Pakistan After US-Israel Strike on Iran’s Khamenei

In Karachi, Pakistan, a wave of violence erupted as protesters clashed with security forces, leading to deadly outcomes. The unrest followed a major international incident involving the United States and Israel targeting Iran’s leadership. The aftermath has left the city in turmoil, with significant casualties reported.

According to authorities, at least nine people died and more than 50 were injured after demonstrators attempted to breach the U.S. Consulate in Karachi. The incident was sparked by the attack that resulted in the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader. Hospital official Summaiya Syed Tariq confirmed the rising death toll as critically injured individuals succumbed to their wounds.

Security Response and Public Advisory

The U.S. Embassy in Pakistan issued an advisory on X, urging American citizens in the country to stay informed about local events and avoid large gatherings. The embassy is closely monitoring the situation at its consulates in Karachi, Lahore, and other locations.

Senior police official Irfan Baloch reported that while the U.S. Consulate itself remained secure, nearby facilities were attacked by protesters. The consulate perimeter withstood the assault, but a nearby police post was set ablaze. Witnesses noted that demonstrators persisted in their efforts, gathering not far from the consulate and calling for more people to join their protest.

Calls for Peace and Ongoing Demonstrations

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi appealed for calm, acknowledging the shared grief with Iran over Khamenei’s death. He emphasized the importance of peaceful protest, a sentiment echoed by the Sindh provincial government, which warned against further violence.

The protests continued for hours, with demonstrators, many of whom were young Shiite Muslims, clashing with law enforcement. In Islamabad, similar scenes unfolded as police used tear gas and batons to disperse protesters near the U.S. Embassy. Peshawar saw thousands attempting to rally, while Multan hosted a peaceful demonstration where attendees voiced strong opposition to the actions of the U.S. and Israel.

Expanding Unrest Across the Nation

As tensions spread, rallies occurred in Lahore and other regions, prompting increased security at American diplomatic missions throughout Pakistan. The unrest highlights the significant Shiite minority in Pakistan, a group that has frequently expressed opposition to U.S. and Israeli policies, though large-scale clashes are not common.

With Shiites comprising about 15% of Pakistan’s population, the community’s response to international events continues to shape domestic dynamics. As the situation develops, authorities remain vigilant to prevent further escalation.
