In a bold statement, Senator Lindsey Graham has called for decisive military action against Iran, urging the deployment of U.S. Marines to seize Kharg Island. This strategic move, he argues, could cripple Iran’s economy by targeting its primary oil export hub, reminiscent of the historic battles of World War II.
Senator Graham’s Call for Action
Appearing on Fox News Sunday, Graham, a retired Air Force Reserve colonel, suggested that capturing Kharg Island would deliver a significant blow to the Iranian regime. “We did Iwo Jima. We can do this,” Graham asserted, emphasizing his confidence in the Marines. His proposal comes amid ongoing U.S. military operations against Iran, which have resulted in 13 U.S. service members’ deaths and around 200 injuries.
“My money is always on the Marines,” Graham stated, dismissing concerns about potential missile strikes and drone attacks as mere “armchair quarterbacking.”
Reactions from Fellow Republicans
Graham’s remarks have sparked criticism within his own party. Representative Anna Paulina Luna labeled his comments as “unacceptable and dark,” accusing him of treating troops as “expendable cattle.” Similarly, Representative Nancy Mace criticized Graham’s foreign policy approach, recalling his past positions on Iraq and Afghanistan. Paul Dans, a primary challenger to Graham, described him as “drunk on war and power.”
A Look Back at Iwo Jima
The battle of Iwo Jima, cited by Graham, remains one of the bloodiest in Marine Corps history. The 36-day campaign resulted in over 26,000 American casualties, with nearly 7,000 fatalities. The Japanese defense, entrenched in underground fortifications, resulted in a higher number of American casualties compared to their opposition. These staggering losses influenced President Harry Truman’s decision to use atomic bombs to end the war, avoiding a potentially catastrophic invasion of Japan.
The Strategic Importance of Kharg Island
Kharg Island, a key asset in the Persian Gulf, processes about 90% of Iran’s crude oil exports. Its deep waters facilitate direct docking by supertankers, making it an attractive target for U.S. military strategy. Recent airstrikes have already targeted the island’s military installations, although its oil infrastructure remains untouched.
U.S. officials are considering a ground assault or naval blockade, with several Marine units en route to the region. CBS reports that elements of the 82nd Airborne Division may also be deployed.

With 14 U.S. service members killed and over 200 wounded thus far, the potential ground operation would mark a significant escalation, potentially exposing troops to Iran’s military capabilities. Despite previous assurances from President Trump that the conflict would not escalate into a prolonged ground war, the situation remains tense with no clear resolution in sight.
