US Forces Capture Venezuelan President Maduro in Covert Operation
In a surprising move, US military forces executed a daring operation to apprehend Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, following months of strategic pressure from the Trump administration. This clandestine mission aimed to bring Maduro to trial in the United States, intensifying the geopolitical tension in South America.
President Donald Trump disclosed the details of the mission during a Saturday interview on “Fox and Friends Weekend,” explaining that Maduro, along with his wife Cilia Flores, was transported by helicopter to a US naval vessel.
Maduro’s Stronghold Breached
According to Trump, Maduro was heavily protected within a secure presidential palace described as a “fortress.” Despite these defenses, the Venezuelan leader failed to reach a purported safety space within the palace, thanks to the swift actions of the US forces.
Trump elaborated that American troops were equipped with “massive blowtorches” to breach steel barriers if necessary. “He didn’t get that space closed,” Trump remarked. “He was trying to get into it, but he got bum-rushed right so fast that he didn’t get into that. We were prepared.” The preparation included rehearsals in a replica of the palace.
Operation in the Dark
The operation unfolded under the cover of darkness, with Trump stating that the US managed to extinguish “almost all of the lights in Caracas.” As explosions echoed through the city, the mission concluded in under 30 minutes.
Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez reported casualties among civilians and military personnel. Meanwhile, Trump noted that a few American operatives sustained injuries, though no fatalities were reported on the US side. “A couple of guys were hit, but they came back and they’re supposed to be in pretty good shape,” he said.
Weather Influences Timing
Weather conditions played a crucial role in the timing of the operation, as US forces delayed action for several days awaiting ideal conditions. Trump recounted, “We waited four days… And then all of a sudden it opened up and we said, go. And I’ll tell you, it’s, it was just amazing.”
Maduro’s Future
Following his capture, Maduro and Flores are en route to New York, where they face charges related to allegations of narco-terrorism, as outlined in a Justice Department indictment.
Rising US-Venezuela Tensions
This event marks a significant escalation from previous US military actions targeting alleged drug trafficking operations linked to Venezuela. Since September, the US has conducted 35 strikes, reportedly resulting in over 115 casualties. A recent strike on December 29 targeted a facility associated with drug smuggling, further escalating US involvement in the region.
