Governor Whitmer Forms Task Force to Improve Child Literacy

Michigan Governor Establishes Task Force to Improve Child Literacy

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has taken a significant step to address the state’s declining reading scores by creating the Every Child Reads Champions Council. This task force, composed of individuals with expertise in education, community organizing, philanthropy, and business, aims to enhance literacy programs, support teachers, and ensure students thrive in their reading abilities.

According to recent reports, Michigan has been lagging behind other states in reading proficiency, prompting bipartisan calls for urgent action to help students catch up. Proposed initiatives in the upcoming state budget include teacher training in a new curriculum, funding for literacy tutors, and adjustments to school funding formulas.

Matt Gillard, president of Michigan’s Children, expressed support for the governor’s initiative to engage experts in improving literacy. Gillard emphasized the importance of elected officials heeding expert advice to yield positive outcomes in literacy initiatives.

The Every Child Reads Champions Council will consist of 16 members, including the state superintendent and director of the Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential. Applications are currently open for individuals interested in joining the council, with appointees slated to be announced in August.

Gillard highlighted the significance of selecting individuals with practical experience in literacy programs and a deep understanding of effective educational strategies to drive improvements in literacy skills at both state and local levels.
