Grand Rapids’ New Police Chief Aims to Enhance Community Engagement
Grand Rapids, Michigan, has appointed Joe Trigg as the city’s new police chief, with plans to elevate community engagement to new heights. Trigg, who brings over 25 years of experience with the department, expressed his commitment to building connections and understanding with the community during his tenure.
Selection Process and Focus on Community Engagement
City manager Mark Washington selected Trigg after a thorough search process that included a public forum with four finalists. Trigg, who had been serving as interim chief since March, emerged as the ideal candidate due to his dedication to fostering community relationships and promoting transparency within the Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD).
“I want to be that person at our department that can take our community engagement to the next level,” Trigg stated. “And not just be a word — a buzz word, right — but actually to build a connection and understanding with the community, something I’ve worked on my whole career since putting on this uniform.”
Past Criticisms and Moving Forward
Trigg’s appointment follows the departure of the previous chief, Eric Winstrom, who voiced concerns about anti-police rhetoric in the city. Despite past controversies, including a high-profile shooting incident involving an officer, Trigg believes in the department’s progress and welcomes constructive criticism as a means to drive improvement.
“Pressure is a privilege, right?” Trigg affirmed. “It’s a tough job, it’s a lot of criticism, but we’ve got men and women to shoulder it. And if for some reason they have to pause or they fall below the expectation, I believe that we have an accountability system to address that.”
Commitment to Accountability and Improvement
Trigg’s immediate focus as full-time chief is to continue fostering positive relationships with the community and enhancing the department’s accountability measures. A formal swearing-in ceremony for Trigg is scheduled for June 29, symbolizing a new chapter for the Grand Rapids Police Department under his leadership.
As Grand Rapids welcomes its new police chief, the city anticipates a renewed commitment to community engagement and transparency, setting the stage for a collaborative and inclusive approach to law enforcement.
