Petition to Dissolve Surprise City as Controversial Detention Center Plans Emerge
In an unexpected move, a petition seeking the disbandment of the city of Surprise has surfaced just as city officials prepare for a crucial City Council meeting. This development follows the revelation of plans to erect an immigration detention facility in proximity to a chemical storage site.
The petition was introduced by activist Jeremy Helfgot, who emphasizes that the crux of the matter lies in the city administration’s poor communication. “I would much rather see the elected leaders of Surprise stand up and do something, even take a meeting with community members so we can talk about the situation,” Helfgot expressed.
Concerns are mounting over the proposed facility’s location, with potential health risks highlighted for both future detainees and surrounding residents. The ambitious initiative aims to gather 70,000 signatures to facilitate a transition of jurisdiction to Maricopa County.
Helfgot criticized the city’s leadership, stating, “Mayor Kevin Sartor and the members of his City Council have refused every public inquiry regarding safety and hazards in connection with this facility and its location.” He advocates for Surprise to emulate other cities nationwide in resisting the Department of Homeland Security’s acquisitions. As of now, the city has not issued a formal response to this petition.
