Four Brighton Area Schools Board Members Expelled from Livingston County’s Republican Party
Four members of the Brighton Area Schools Board of Education faced expulsion from the Livingston County’s Republican Party (LCRP) this week. The removal came without a specified reason but closely followed their support for a $156 million school bond that was ultimately rejected on May 5.
Bond Proposal Rejected
The rejected bond aimed to address safety concerns, classroom updates, and the replacement of aging building systems in schools across the county. Despite the board’s intention to meet the needs of students and the community, the proposal did not garner enough support.
Responses from Board Members
Jennifer Marks, one of the ousted board members, expressed surprise at the party’s decision, highlighting that similar situations in the past did not lead to such actions. Roger Myers, the board’s president, criticized the punitive action, emphasizing the importance of allowing voters to decide on such matters.
Alicia Urbain and Katie Tierney, the other affected board members, remained focused on prioritizing students and community interests despite the party’s decision.
Political Fallout
Myers raised concerns about smear campaigns influencing bond outcomes and reiterated the primary losers in such situations are the children. The Livingston County Republican Party refrained from commenting on the matter, leaving the situation unresolved.
