White Dermatologist Sues Over Exclusion from Black Doctor Directory

Legal Battle Unfolds Over Black Doctor Directory Amidst Racial Tensions

In an era where racial discourse often intersects with healthcare, a lawsuit has emerged challenging the boundaries of inclusion and discrimination. At the center of this legal confrontation is Dr. Travis Morrell, a white dermatologist, who was excluded from “Find A Black Doctor,” a directory specifically curated to connect Black patients with Black healthcare providers.

The legal action was initiated by Do No Harm, an organization with a vast network of healthcare professionals, students, patients, and policymakers. Their lawsuit claims that the exclusion of Dr. Morrell from the directory is a case of racial discrimination, violating the Civil Rights Act of 1866.

Founded by Dr. Dina D. Strachan, a Harvard and Yale alumna and a board-certified dermatologist, “Find A Black Doctor” was created to address the healthcare disparities faced by Black communities. The directory’s mission is to facilitate access to physicians who share cultural backgrounds with their patients, aiming to improve health outcomes within the Black community. According to the directory’s website, “Having access to Black doctors has been shown to improve health outcomes — particularly for Black men.”

However, Do No Harm’s lawsuit contends that such a directory unfairly excludes non-Black doctors, thus denying them potential patients and valuable advertising exposure. Kurt Miceli, MD, the chief medical officer at Do No Harm, stated in a press release, “Racial discrimination in medicine is unlawful and undermines trust between patients and providers.”

Critics argue that the lawsuit reflects a broader trend of opposition to initiatives aimed at addressing racial disparities. Similar controversies have arisen in other sectors, including education and business, where programs designed to support Black communities are often challenged by those who claim exclusion.

This legal battle highlights the ongoing debate over how best to address racial inequities in healthcare. While some see directories like “Find A Black Doctor” as a necessary step towards equality, others view them as exclusionary. The outcome of this case could have significant implications for similar initiatives across the country.
